Kyiv-Boryspil International Airport’s timeworn departures area got a big boost on December 25th when the modern, new Duty Free shop, designed and built by Perry Construction officially opened for business.
The newly designed shop has already generated extremely positive response from foreigners and Ukrainians parting through Ukraine’s highest volume boarder crossing.
The high-ceilinged, 600-m2 shop will boost sales though a three-fold increase in square meters, wide isles, easy ingress-egress and modern design. The wide-open sales area was designed to eliminate traffic and give maximum visual communication throughout the store. To clear the space, the entire 700-m2 ceiling was hung on just four central decorative structural columns with adjustable high-tension cables stretched to the ceiling overhangs.
The result is not only better communication within the store, but also an eye-catching dramatic for the exterior of the store and the airport departures area. The non-load bearing perimeter walls are a combination glass/decorative panels, their light construction creates the effect the store’s ceiling it is floating. The glass periphery allows the store to be flooded with natural light during the day.
At night, dramatic interior lighting invite travelers into the Duty Free shop.
The simple but striking interior design integrates Duty Free’s business strategy of “stores-within-a-store.” The store is planned around sections (cosmetics, jewelry, travel, electronics, fashion, tobacco, spirits, etc.) with unique textures, materials and style delineating them. Cantilevered metal sofits, reminiscent of an airplane wing, create subtle divisions between the sections.
Warm bamboo floor accent the fashion section with hard neon and steal in the electronics section. Italian floor tiles form a circular pattern around the central jewelry counter.
Perry Construction’s turnkey contract includes ground-up construction of a new of the new 600 m2 shop, electrical, Daiken multi-split HVAC system, mechanical, data, security, CCTV, fire extinguishing and signaling units, audio and PA systems, all finishes and decorations, and many specialty works including a walk-in cigar humidor and decorative overhead canopies.

The project has been a resounding success. Since opening, the Duty Free shop has been uniformly embraced travelers and airport authorities alike as a great lift to Ukraine’s international image. Most importantly, shop owners KievRianta’s sales have surged since the store opened and feel that Perry’s design and professionalism have created a tremendous gain in customer satisfaction.
